I’ve been playing Phantom Abyss since it first entered early access and I will not be stopping anytime soon now it’s officially launched. The adrenaline-fuelled gameplay gives me so much joy every time I do a run, whether I’m playing it casually or seriously trying to challenge myself.

Available on day on with Game Pass: Awaken from slumber and explore a surreal retrotech world as Elster, a technician Replika searching for her lost partner and her lost dreams.

There are three modes to play. Adventure allows players to find relics and earn reputation points. Classic mode is a rogue-like one where temples become increasingly difficult as you get farther in.

You'll only ever get one attempt to clear a temple, if you fail then you'll be moved on to a new procedurally-generated tunnel. Each of these unique temples shows up for a variety of players who will all try to complete the map. With your trusty whip in hand you'll aim to reach further and further into the temple by picking up keys, and unlocking new boons from the Olmec deity that is trapped in the temple with you.

Your character has a finite number of hearts that dwindle with every hit you take. Run out of hearts, your character will die, and your run will end. Another player may pick up your essence for a boost.

Jon Bitner As fun as the latest in the franchise is, there are plenty of other cooperative shooters worthy of your time.

Completing each run in the game’s Adventure mode Phantom Abyss unlocks a new kind of whip for you to use. Each new whip grants a single buff when equipped — one grants an extremely useful double jump, and another lets you drop coins you’ve collected in water to restore your health. There are loads of them, and once unlocked, can be used to augment any future runs you undertake. You can also spend coins collected in-level on temporary upgrades that will disappear after the run.

Be warned, you only get one attempt at each temple and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again...The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. Once the legendary relic at the bottom of each temple is found, the temple goes away forever and becomes the priceless trophy of the skilled adventurer. Asynchronous Multiplayer Explore the perilous halls and colossal rooms of each temple alongside the phantoms of fallen players that came before you and use their successes and failures to your advantage to progress deeper than they ever could have hoped. Watch and learn from the mistakes of up to 20 phantoms including your Steam friends that have attempted the same temple and steal their whips as they fall. - - -- --

My biggest gripes with this action platformer concern the temperamental physics, repetitive maps, and lengthy load times.

Remember Phantom Abyss? You know, the asynchronous multiplayer game that tasks you with delving into ancient, labyrinthine tombs in order to find the treasures hidden within?

Armed only with a whip and your guile, you get one attempt, and only one person in the world will succeed at clearing any given temple. If you successfully claim a relic, that exact temple configuration is locked forever, serving as a trophy of your victory. There’s no fear of running out of temples, however, as there are countless ruins with unique layouts, thanks to Phantom Abyss

Unlock new whips to choose from before venturing into your next temple. Each whip carries a powerful blessing but also a curse that may complicate your attempt at riches and glory.
